As part of a series exhibited at the historic Mandarin Plaza in Los Angeles' Chinatown, these paintings interpret select areas of the space that are often overlooked: staircases, hallways, alleys, etc. The images attempt to demonstrate the original beauty of Chinatown through a contemporary eye. Just as there is a balancing of representation and abstraction in the works, a tension between ornate traditional Chinese motifs and flat, color shapes exists as well. The titles are excerpts referenced from the first page of chapters in Frank Chin's novel âÂÂDonald DukâÂÂ, in which a young Chinese-American boy struggles with his cultural identity.
