The work takes the form of a compact, vertically oriented structure that hangs like a punching bag or ceremonial object, oscillating between play, ritual, and impact. Constructed from brightly colored acrylic, hardware, and laser-cut components, the piece integrates a stylized rocket ship populated by Black women in space helmets—figures that evoke both Afrofuturist possibility and the historical absence of Black bodies within dominant narratives of space exploration. These figures are embedded within a dense, mechanical surface of gears, bolts, and translucent planes, suggesting systems of propulsion, labor, and collective movement. At its apex, a gold, mask-like form recalls African sculptural traditions while simultaneously projecting a futuristic visage, collapsing temporal boundaries between past and future. The object's hanging orientation introduces a bodily relationship to the viewer, referencing endurance, tension, and kinetic energy, as if the work itself is caught mid-launch.
About the Artist
Damien Davis' practice builds a personal lexicon of shapes and colors to question how cultures code, decode, and recode representations of race.
