Stairs: Inevitability. What goes up comes down. Balance. Also family structure and hierarchy. When my aunt was pregnant with my cousin, she once stood at the top of the stairs in my grandmother’s house and felt two hands push on her back. Unable to withstand the pressure, she fell all the way to the bottom. As my family tells the story, the hands belonged to the ghost of my great-grandmother who was characteristically spiteful of others’ happiness. My grandfather also had an injurious fall on these stairs.
About the Artist
Langdon Graves creates drawings and installations that are steeped in mysticism, domesticity, and a surrealist examination of the intersection of the tangible and the unknown.
