I work in series and the paintings usually begin with a process of getting comfortable with my surroundings. I do this in many ways. Recently at a residency in Wyoming, I spent time painting watercolors outside, looking for the rusts in the hills, the greens and browns and purples in Piney Creek and the shapes of the vegetation and contours of the hills. I’m always looking for things that give a place its particular 'placeness' and try to figure out how to express those qualities and experiences in images that are compelling in their interpretations.
