Traditionally, “still life” is defined as an assemblage of inanimate objects as its subject. For me, I interpret it more metaphorically, as I’ve always found it difficult to detach these said objects from their contexts. What of life does this stillness embodied in the work allow for? What can we discover when presented with the opportunity of stillness? Stillness, arguably, is both a commodity and sensation that feels ever waning in today’s world. Ultimately, we should refrain from defining it as a lack of action, or lack of anything for that matter. I’d argue that an intentional stillness is egregiously more difficult, complex, and, sometimes, powerful than action.
