I was inspired to create the 'Brushworks' series after discovering a vintage wallpaper brush at a local artist's barn sale in Weston, CT. The resulting works highlighted my approach of repurposing the materials I use within my practice. Using sweeping gestural marks, I shape acrylic paint on canvas and watercolor paper, allowing fluid brushstrokes and the intersection between the intentional and the subliminal to guide my process. Acting in contrast to my more frenetic motifs, my method becomes an exercise in restraint and minimalism. Although deceptively effortless, the 'Brushworks' elegance draws upon my influence by the tradition of Asian calligraphy and lies in the precision, finesse, and mastery it takes to realize them.
About the Artist
