On and off over the years I have been making paintings with oil stick that are loose and tactile. My early work was all about perfection but the oil stick allowed me to embrace the humanity of imperfection—to have my hand be apparent rather than hidden. These shaped panels are quite big though, so using oil stick wouldn’t have been practical. I researched materials that could replicate and amplify the texture and consistency of the oil stick. Molding paste did the trick and I began to experiment with different methods of texturing the panels with an assortment of tools using a combination of planning and spontaneity. There is an intentionality with the grain of the texture to guide the eye, to amplify tension, and create balance.
About the Artist
Dan Covert is an artist working across a range of media, from metal sculptures to low-relief wall-works, to investigate the potential for form to create its own graphic language and symbolic systems.
