Birds have historically (and inhumanely) been used to test air quality and other environmental conditions, as with coal mine canaries. They have also been employed as messengers of news, contributing to their symbolic identification as harbingers of things to come. Flocks of birds in my grandmother’s yard always made her uneasy with their erratic behavior and ability to alight anywhere. This card does not represent literal death but signals a change in the quality of one’s emotional environment.
