This series of paintings called 'Sounds of Earth' made for my exhibition at Uprise Art are focused on the idea of natural and atmospheric earthly phenomenas. I use oil paint not only blended into smooth gradients, but also as a tool to seek contrast, planes and terrestrial sensations, by leaving in some of the works, the imprint of the brush's trace and force. For me, they're like emphases in the painting, like loud sounds or vibrations on the canvas - like colors and brush strokes simulating frequencies of the landscape. The paintings and their titles also reference the ancient elemental concepts of earth, fire, air and water. In this piece, 'Wadati–Benioff' refers to scientists Hugo Benioff and Kiyoo Wadati, whose early research mapped deep-focus earthquakes along a sloping seismic plane beneath oceanic trenches. Their discovery (now known as the Wadati-Benioff zone) provided key evidence of tectonic plate subduction and helped lay the groundwork for modern plate tectonic theory. For me, this painting is vibrant earth.
