Organized into stacks and grids, these compositions are a continuation on a theme of simultaneous decay and accretion. The works are as much surface as they are image, as color and shape fall into line with alternating layers of chalk, pigment, and distress. I think of the forms as a broken alphabet or a set of glyphs, scattered and rearranged into something adjacent to text and verse.
About the Artist
Through a process of painting and subsequently sanding down layers, Clay Mahn creates works that unearth and reveal forms which seem to already exist.
