These collages were all created between 2018-2019 and were inspired by objects discovered in antique stores, museum collections, on the street, and in my own home. With this new grouping of collages, I am shifting to the series title 'Utility Suite' (same as my solo exhibition title). I feel it represents more accurately what I am evoking with these works. The word 'utility' brings to mind useful and practical things, which these works hint at but do not fully embody. I am interested in the state that exists between function and decoration–a place of potential for shape-shifting. A suite is a collection of things, but it also refers to a private, domestic realm – the imagined space in which these objects live. I remain fascinated by the lives of inanimate objects and wonder what else an object can become when it transforms. Each piece starts with an observation, which is translated into several loose drawings until I feel confident enough to start cutting paper. I experiment with color combinations until I arrive at something that feels harmonious but also carries some visual weight. The process is as exploratory as it needs to be until I arrive at an image that feels right–an object that does not yet exist.
