Given time and space to reflect, and remember, alongside someone with shared history - as my friend and I did in Sonoma during my Uprise Art x MacArthur Place Residency - the flood of surprise at the polarities between then and now felt almost overwhelming. We had to state it aloud: this is who we are now. We are friends who have witnessed each other grow up, watched each other fall in love, cheered for the other’s new job, helped one another learn to breastfeed, hugged one another at a parent’s funeral, supported each other through divorces - held one another’s hand during spiritual homecoming. We sat with our wine and toasted one another, toasted us, in the California sun: this is who we are now, a declaration that the love we share as friends is intentional, constant, and always maturing.
