I recently participated in a group exhibition at the New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, centered around their collection of small religious paintings called ex-votos. Over the last eighteen months, my brain has been occupied by devotional art and the visual language of their messaging. As an outsider to Catholicism, I often feel like a tourist in this religious space, a sensation that is in line with other aspects of my experience as a Tejana living and working in the Borderlands. Through my study of the tradition of ex-votos and their narratives, it became imperative to me to extend my gratitude for the universal pleasures of life—a shared meal, a plant-filled room, a perfectly shaped cloud. I have woven images of some of my favorite things into my recent work and they bring me such joy.

Xochi Solis

About the Artist

Xochi creates her work through the repeated act of layering paint, hand-dyed paper, vinyl, found images, and other materials; each piece is a meditation on color, texture, and shape all leading to a greater awareness of the visual intricacies found in her immediate environment, both natural and cultural.
