In artist Makoto Fujimura’s book Culture Care, he describes how poet Emily Dickinson 'saw herself in the dashes' - the between spaces that hold the breath for echo and contemplation. In Lecce I chatted with an artist who sold silk garments in rich colors that she wove, dyed, and constructed by hand, all within a beautiful shop of her creation. I was struck by her presence in that space and by the multiple processes each garment required. I imagined how she must pause in between each stage to envision and obtain information about how to bring a piece to life.
