“Revelation” was an experiment that led to the development of my shaped panel pieces. Before it, I’d been making reliefs by affixing wood forms to backing panels, but the shapes were much simpler and geometric. I wanted to create something that was more painterly, complex in composition, naive, and organic. So I started sculpting large quantities of molding paste on the surface of a panel until it had quite a bit of depth. I loved the result. but wondered if I could make compositions like it hang freely on a wall without the backing. “Revelation” sat in my studio for years as the idea of complex connected panel pieces materialized, because I was getting a lot from being around it. Now, finally some of the compositions in this collection of work like “Estate,” “Exist,” and “Rehash” are at a level of organic complexity where they felt at home with “Revelation” and it was time to let the painting leave my studio.
About the Artist
Dan Covert is an artist working across a range of media, from metal sculptures to low-relief wall-works, to investigate the potential for form to create its own graphic language and symbolic systems.
