If I'm not in stacks of dusty vinyl, you can find me in stacks of dusty books this trip. My fascination with vintage travel books of Mexico began with my installation for the Denver Art Museum in 2017. These books remind me of the days when I was a child and would pour over pages in the library that depicted a country that I was proudly told I was from, but that I didn't really know. I'd look so carefully at the images of people that had my face, my hands, my body. I'd study images of beautiful landscapes and colors so rich and so comforting. Many many years later I find myself here in this country and sometimes I feel the same wonder and awkward disconnect. I choose to work with found images illustrating Mexico in my collage work as a way to bridge that disconnect, as a way to heal.

About the Artist

Xochi creates her work through the repeated act of layering paint, hand-dyed paper, vinyl, found images, and other materials; each piece is a meditation on color, texture, and shape all leading to a greater awareness of the visual intricacies found in her immediate environment, both natural and cultural.
