Two years ago, I crossed paths with a woman who was preparing to leave London and retire in Scotland. It was her last day in the city, and she had spent a lifetime collecting vintage Japanese silks, which she was now parting with. When I saw the kimono linings, I was instantly inspired. The inner layers mirrored the beauty of the vibrant exteriors, but I was drawn to the understated elegance of the lining. They felt more intimate and subtle. I told her I would give them a second life.
