My friend who accompanied me at my Uprise Art x MacArthur Place residency in Sonoma has known me since we were in middle school together. We were part of a group of five friends, inexplicably dubbed by one of our boyfriends as “The Acorns”. We didn’t understand the name, yet it stuck. And now, in our mid-40s, the name seems to describe our younger selves - and our 30-year friendship - perfectly. As Acorns, we were fledglings who emitted enthusiastic energy yet without evident direction. We were just beginning to form ourselves. Acorns develop into Oaks. We remain connected - still to one another, and also to the knowledge of who we’re always becoming. We are solid, rooted, and defined.
