'New Shapes' is a series of staged still-life photographs. To make these photographs, I made sculptures from copper and aluminum and assembled them in temporary arrangements with perspex and mirrors. I photographed these arrangements under multiple colored light sources. My aim with this project was to address the material concerns of photography in the era of its rapid digitalization. Photography used to promise a view of the world on a piece of paper, but today it is disposable and mostly screen-based. In order to address the increasing dematerialization of the medium, I constructed everything within these images by hand. The highly polished and reflective surfaces in these constructed worlds mimic the appearance of computer generated images and 3D rendering. Visually the works intentionally slip between the digital and real, inviting the viewer to reflect on their expectations of photography today.
