I made this series of paintings to act as keepsakes for my recent trip to Mérida, Mexico. The trip sits in my mind as broken snippets of color and shapes, flashes of memories of paint-peeled walls of concrete blocks, colorful iron gates, and narrow wooden doors textured with time. Mérida is swathed in these rigid facades, often opening up to lush open-air courtyards and patios beyond.

Artist Arielle Zamora creates optical abstractions by carving into, and painting on, panels prepared with joint compound.
