Many of the techniques I use, underpainting, constant addition and subtraction of paint, and the distressing of the surface produce a layered, textured, and aged surface that is both literal and metaphorical. Memory and nostalgia play a big part in my work, and there is a carnivalesque feeling to many of my paintings which I trace back to childhood memories of local fairs and agricultural festivals in rural Australia. Through the intentional use of colour, I am always trying to capture and convey a sense of childlike joy and wonder.
