These works first began as an investigation of roots and the symbolism they serve within our family ties. However, as this body of work progressed over the summer months, my family was met with some challenges. My focus shifted and I became more interested in what those roots I was observing produced: flowers. With the loss of a friend, our beloved dog, and some complications with my husband's health, we found our house filled with flowers from friends and family. It was rare to find our dining room table without a bouquet of flowers, radiating energy into our home. Each day we sat and marveled at their beauty, watching as they changed with each passing day, fading and losing their shape, while also requiring daily attention - refreshing water, trimming stems, sweeping away fallen petals. Flowers are innately resilient; growing and adapting, dispersing their seeds, and creating a new generation unseen under the ground that will bloom and bring color, joy, and energy back to the landscape again next season. They follow an inherent set of genetic materials that make up their composition but can also be nurtured to grow in a particular place or way - they respond to your care and attention. With this series, I found myself contemplating my role as a caregiver and the relationship between nature versus nurture. I began these works by folding the paper in various symmetric radial patterns to create an underlying structure. I then dyed each piece of paper with several natural dyes, some of which I harvested from my local environment, utilizing different methods to create a depth of color and variety. The process of naturally dying the paper for these works was experimental and unpredictable, while the burnt lines and applied reed, are planned and organized, representing a temporary state of being. The center of each piece, like the eye of the flower, draws you in while allowing contemplation of the delicate and temporal nature of the subject matter. The duality of the organic and structural forms is an intentional play, reflecting the delicate balance between the control and chaos of our everyday lives.
