Ex Nihilo' is the product of divergent thinking within my textile-inspired drawings. Expanding on the work in my series, 'Placeholder', 'Ex Nihilo' looks at processing the different types and stages of memory that also include unexpected shifts in direction, interruption, and distraction, as well as how each experience adds to an object’s history or perception. Taken from the Latin phrase which translates to “out of nothing,” 'Ex Nihilo' explores the relationship between worn fabrics and layered memory. Inspired by both domestic linens and sacred textiles, this new collection of drawings references items such as dish towels, prayer shawls, and serviettes. These drawings mark a breaking of new ground and the cultivation of exciting possibilities within a folded textile body of work.
