Cigarette - Many cultures practice ritual burning and inhalation of plants and herbs to conjure or quell spirits. During the early Women's Rights movement, American women adopted the traditionally masculine habit of smoking in public and cigarettes were marketed to them for the first time as "torches of freedom", breaking social codes and fueling the fire of independence (and capitalism, unfortunately). When I was young, my grandmother would sit in an armchair in her living room and smoke cigarettes while she told me her stories. Upright: An opportunity for independence and self-reliance. Inverse: A ritual cleansing or summoning of thoughts may be in order. Discard the remnants of things no longer serving you.
About the Artist
Langdon Graves creates drawings and installations that are steeped in mysticism, domesticity, and a surrealist examination of the intersection of the tangible and the unknown.
